2022 - a year of celebrationsThe Dorset Button industry was said to have started in 1622 by a professional soldier of fortune called Abraham Case. Abraham sought his fortune in warring Europe and on his return married and settled in Shaftesbury, Dorset.
The family business that Abraham started was to contunue for 200 years and affected the lives of many thousands of people in east Dorset. In 2022 we will be celebrating 400 years since the birth of this cottage industry. |
In 2022 we will be celebrating 400 years since the birth of this cottage industry. Earlier this year I asked a selected group of buttoners if they thought this was an occasion we should celebrate. To judge their feelings, they were asked you to complete an online survey. I was very surprised by the response as 99% said yes and many left very positive comments and suggestions.
I feel this is certainly something we should take forward so what is the next step? Firstly, we need a brainstorming session to decide how we want to celebrate and whether there is any way we can include Dorset Button makers from overseas. Ideally, I would like this to become an international event. Many of you who live outside the Uk mentioned that you would like to join with our celebrations. However, I will not be able to do this alone, I need help, so if there is anyone who is willing to support me with this project and, ideally, become a member of a team to organise this event, I would love to hear from you. Please contact me by completing the form on this page. I look forward to hearing from you. Anna Please help us by making a small donation to help cover the costs of this project.
