Online Dorset Button Workshop

The joy of Birdseyes and Singletons

This workshop will concentrate on the Birdseye and Singleton buttons.

It is thought that Birdseye buttons are one of the earliest of the Dorset Button range together with the High Tops and Dorset Knobs. Singletons were supposedly named after the Dorset family that first made them.

Birdseye buttons are made using just fabric and thread. Wire rings were introduced in the 1730s and two further types of buttons were added to the range including Singletons which are made with wire rings, fabric and thread.

To work both buttons your will need:

Materials required for this workshop:

For the Birdseye button:
  • Yarn (can be crochet thread or knitting wool up to a 4ply)*
  • Soft lightweight cotton fabric such as lawn*
  • Template (this will be emailed to you with the worksheet)
  • Tapestry needle*
  • Knitting needle
